Overview
Contract hire and hire purchase are both common for business vehicles, but they serve different goals. Contract hire is usually about predictable use and return. Hire purchase is usually about paying toward ownership.
Comparison table
| Ownership goal | Return the vehicle at the end of the agreement. | Own the vehicle once the agreement is complete. |
| Fleet planning | Helpful for replacement cycles and mileage control. | Helpful where vehicles are kept long term. |
| Maintenance | Maintenance can often be built into contract hire. | Maintenance is usually handled separately by the business. |
| Best for | Fleets, sales cars, vans on planned cycles. | Trades, hauliers and businesses keeping vehicles. |
